There's a lot of it about here, and in the wrong places it's a real problem!
But it struck me this morning, as I was cutting firewood, that it can produce a very beautiful effect

You're definitely on to something. Here in the U.S. of A., worm-eaten, carpenter ant- and termite- chewed floorboards are (or were, before the housing bubble burst) fetching premium prices.
The floor boards in our old farmhouse have many attractive insect chew trails. So long as the wood is otherwise sound, and there are no current wood eaters, we're not worried about it.

some time ago, when we were looking for an antique Irish pine cabinet for the workshop, a local dealer told us that woodworm in a piece of furniture was priceless (as long as it was dead!) as "you couldn't fake woodworm"
